August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean follows a young man named Citizen Barlow who seeks redemption at the home of Aunt Ester, a legendary 285-year-old spiritual healer in 1904 Pittsburgh. His journey aboard the mythical Gem of the Ocean and into the City of Bones explores themes of freedom, responsibility, and generational legacy through poetry, humor, and spiritual power. This is the first play in Wilson's American Century Cycle.
