For art and gardens: Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens

The Cummer, at 829 Riverside Avenue, combines a collection of European and American art with formal gardens on the St. Johns River. It is closed Mondays and stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Children 5 and under are free, and so are visitors with EBT, SNAP or WIC. The museum also runs free admission times, including the first Saturday of the month; check the admission page for the current schedule. For Jacksonville history: Ritz Theatre & Museum

The Ritz, at 829 North Davis Street in LaVilla, tells the story of African American life in Jacksonville. Its permanent exhibit covers James Weldon and J. Rosamond Johnson and the song they wrote, the neighborhood's years as the “Harlem of the South,” and a recreated 1960s lunch-counter sit-in. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., buy tickets by 3, and until 8 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays. Weekend visits are by appointment. Parking around the building is free.Source: Ritz museum page and parking information.

For a free hour at the coast: Beaches Museum

The Beaches Museum, at 381 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville Beach, is free for everyone. Its galleries cover the history of the Beaches communities, with a temporary exhibit that changes every few months, and its outdoor History Park includes a 1903 post office and a 1911 steam locomotive. Docents lead free tours of the park; check in at the lobby. All the buildings have ramps, and a wheelchair is available on request. It is closed Mondays.Source: museum facilities and accessibility.

Make an evening of it

On the first Wednesday of the month, Downtown's Art Walk pairs well with MOCA's free evening hours; the free events guide covers it. Gallery openings, artist talks and exhibitions are in the arts listings, each linked to the museum or gallery's own page.
