By the pier: Seawalk Pavilion

The Seawalk Pavilion on 1st Street North in Jacksonville Beach is the city's outdoor event lawn. A free classic car cruise fills it on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 4 to 7 p.m., and the city shows free movies there on some fall evenings, so bring a chair or a blanket. On selected Saturdays the Jax Beach Arts Market sets up with artists only, free to browse and pet friendly. Its dates are posted on the market's site.Source: City of Jacksonville Beach calendar.

For local history: Beaches Museum

The Beaches Museum at 381 Beach Boulevard tells the story of the Beaches communities, and admission is free. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday afternoons, and closed Mondays. Its evening Boardwalk Talks lecture series, gallery tours and occasional chapel concerts are listed on the museum's events page.Source: Beaches Museum.

Third Thursdays: North Beaches Art Walk

On the third Thursday of every month, rain or shine, galleries and shops around Beaches Town Center, where Atlantic Boulevard meets the ocean, open for the North Beaches Art Walk. The Town Center also hosts seasonal events through the year, including a fall festival and a holiday celebration; its calendar has the dates. Public parking in the Town Center is limited and paid, so walking or biking in is easier on busy nights.Source: North Beaches Art Walk and City of Atlantic Beach parking.

Before you go to the beach

  • Alcohol and glass are not allowed on the sand in any of the three cities. Picnics are fine, but grills are not, and everyone stays off the dunes.
  • Dogs: Jacksonville Beach allows leashed dogs on the beach all day from October through March, and only before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. from April through September. Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach allow leashed dogs year-round. Always pick up after them.
  • Lifeguards staff the Neptune and Atlantic Beach stands daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Jacksonville Beach staffs its towers seasonally and patrols all year. In Jacksonville Beach, nobody swims or surfs within 300 feet of the pier.
  • Parking: Jacksonville Beach charges for parking on spring and summer weekends, and its kiosks take cards, not cash. Atlantic Beach charges at some beach accesses in season and in Beaches Town Center, and suggests Hanna Park as an alternative.
